Keeping Your Data Safe

Access and accuracy of your data is key to the success of any business. The PowerVault MD1200 has been engineered to help maximize your uptime and security of your data.

PowerVault MD1200 Keeping Your Data Safe
Dell PowerVault MD1200 - Redundant Path with I/O Load Balancing
Redundant Path with I/O Load Balancing: You can rest assured that your data will be available when you need it. Even if a single cable path fails from one port of the PERC H810, you will continue to have access to your data through the second port.
Dell PowerVault MD1200 - Self-Encrypting Drives (SED)
Self-Encrypting Drives (SED): Self-encrypting drives help to ensure that your data is secure with drive-level encryption, so, even if a drive is removed from its storage system or the server in which it is housed, the data on the drive is encrypted and rendered useless to anyone who attempts to access it without the appropriate security authorization. Additionally, SED supports instant secure erase of drives, which permanently removes data when repurposing or decommissioning drives.
Dell PowerVault MD1200 - Hot-Swappable Drives
Hot-Swappable Drives: With hot-swappable drives, you can remove and replace drives even when your system is operating. No need to shut down, and no need to reboot: New drives are available right away.

Leveraging the PERC H810 RAID Controller

The PowerVault MD1200 leverages the PERC H810 Host-RAID adapter with the latest PCI Express 2.0 interface, offering excellent performance for enterprise.
  • The configuration of the PERC H810 Host-RAID adapter helps to increase reliability and fault tolerance by enabling the software to recognize the entire enclosure as a single unit, regardless of how many disks are activated for storage. With the PERC H810, customers can choose the RAID option that supports their application. The PERC H810 supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.
  • Dell PowerVault MD1200 is engineered to work optimally with Dell PowerEdge servers. Dell OpenManage™ Storage Manager Software can manage both the external and internal storage within the server itself.
  • Streamlining storage management through a single, common interface helps reduce resource load on the system, and is easier to navigate for the user as well. The PowerVault MD1200 utilizes the same 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives as Dell's PowerEdge servers, and the same power supplies and fans as the PowerVault MD1220, helping to reduce the number of spares required.
  • The PowerVault MD1220 is supported behind most PowerEdge servers: See PERC H810 server compatibility matrix for a list of currently supported servers.

Other Information
Included Management Software Support
The Dell™ PowerVault™ MD1200 and MD1220 enclosures are managed via the management software provided for the PERC External RAID controller.

The Dell™ PERC H800 is supported with Dell™ 11th Generation PowerEdge™ Servers and managed via OpenManage™ Storage Management (minimum version 6.2).

Operating System Support
The Dell™ PowerVault™ MD1200 and MD1220 enclosures, via PERC H800, support all major enterprise server operating systems consistent with the Dell™ 11G PowerEdge™ servers and Dell™ OpenManage™ Storage Management (minimum version 6.2) software. This includes Microsoft™ Windows™ Server 2003 and 2008, Red Hat™ Linux 4 and 5, and SUSE™ Linux 10 and 11. For more specific details on supported operating systems, refer to the PERC web page (www.dell.com/PERC) or OpenManage™ 6.2 support matrix.

Drive Support
Dell™ PowerVault™ MD1200 and MD1220 enclosures support SAS hot-pluggable HDDs (hard-disk drives) and SSDs** (solid-state drives). MD1200 allows for both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch** form factor drives, and MD1220 allows for 2.5-inch form factor drives.

SATA interface drives are not supported with the Dell™ PowerVault™ MD1200 and MD1220 enclosures.

Enclosure Management Module
Each EMM provides the following data path and enclosure management functions for the enclosure:
• Monitoring and controlling enclosure environment elements such as temperature, fan, power supplies, and enclosure LEDs.
• Controlling access to hard drives.
• Communicating enclosure attributes and states to the host server.

Enclosure Failover When Two EMMs are Installed:

If two EMMs are installed, a certain degree of failover is offered. Control and monitoring of the enclosure elements can be transferred from one EMM to another in the event of an EMM failure. A failover occurs whenever communication is lost between an EMM and its peer. In the event of a peer EMM failure, the surviving EMM activates the amber status LED of the failed EMM. The surviving EMM then takes over the responsibility of enclosure management, which includes monitoring and control of the audible alarm, enclosure LEDs, power supplies, and fans. When a failed EMM is replaced, enclosure management functions do not automatically return to the replaced EMM unless an additional failure occurs that triggers another failover event.
